In the 2018-19 Zonta Year, the Zonta Service Committee hopes to perform a volunteer act each month. In September, we asked our members to purchase jewelry made in Haiti to support our District 7 Haiti project. Below are pictures of our Cape Girardeau Zonta sisters during their medical mission trip. The proceeds from the jewelry sales helps fund the purchase of the supplies for the medical and dental trips.
Zonta members also helped out at the Council for Drug Free Youth.
Zonta of Jefferson City continues to provide welcome baskets for Habitat for Humanity. On October 26, we joined Jeff City in welcoming a family to their new home.
During the 2016-17 Zonta year, Zonta Club of Jefferson City has provided 7 welcome baskets to families gaining a new home with Habitat for Humanity. We are honored to be a small part of their special day.
The Zonta Club of Jefferson City is sponsoring the training of a Labrador puppy donated by Peertree Acres Labradors.
Once the dog was two months old he went to Puppies with Purpose in Columbia. Puppies with Purpose uses adult puppy raisers and students from the University of Missouri to raise and socialize puppies while they are still very young. The students will care for the puppy on and off over 1.5 – 2 years of training which will be done by inmates at the Women’s Correctional Center in Vandalia, MO.
CHAMP Assistance Dogs, based in St. Louis, manages the training and takes applications from people in need of a service dogs. CHAMP evaluates each person and makes the match with just the right dog, often adding some very specialized training. The service dog will be placed with a person at no charge.
The organizations will test the puppies from a litter that Peertree Acres had in May. After the testing they will make their selection. The dog is officially named “Zonta JC of Peertree Acres” and will maintain the name Zonta, not only on his records but as his call name for life.
“I love that this project is such a great fit for Zonta, because both organizations mentioned are run by women, most of the students are women, the impact that puppy responsibility had on the female inmates is one of the most amazing transformations you will ever see, and the end result of helping someone in need of a service dog – many of which are children – is amazing,” says Kathy Peerson, owner of Peertree Acres Labradors and Zonta Jefferson City member.
Zonta JC has been busy learning how to be a service dog on the beach! He was able to get some sun and waves with his puppy raiser over their spring break. I bet there are lots of distractions for a puppy…lots of water and birds. Looks like he is doing a good job
JC is growing up!
The Jefferson City Club of Zonta has helped other organizations in the mid-Missouri region. A few of those helped include ABLE, RACS, HABITAT FOR HUMANITY, DREAMS TO REALITY, HALO, and CENTRAL MISSOURI STOP HUMAN TRAFFICING COALITION.
